Conventional ADHD treatment: ADHD treatment usually consists of stimulants such as amphetamines, most commonly in the form of Ritalin. Tips For Managing Or Reversing Your Type 2 Diabetes By Douglas Husbands, D.C.

To control your diabetes, controlling your insulin response throughout the day should be your goal rather than lowering blood glucose (blood sugar). Why? An imbalanced insulin response occurs before an elevated blood glucose. Therefore, by controlling your insulin response you are intervening in the process leading to elevated blood glucose. Normal insulin response causes proper response of other hormones, such as leptin and ghrelin, which is beneficial for healthy body fat/weight.

Here are 9 tips for controlling your insulin response:

1. Always eat breakfast containing some proteins, fat and carbohydrates within 30 minutes of waking up.

Your cortisol levels are highest when you wake up in the morning. Your energy upon awakening before breakfast is produced mostly by cortisol which breaks down lean tissue (bones, muscles, joints, skin) to make glucose to keep your brain and body running. Decreased lean body tissue will lead to accelerated aging.

2. Don't have coffee first thing in the morning before breakfast.

Caffeine stimulates cortisol output. See #1.

3. Exercise an hour a day 5 or 6 days a week, preferably in the morning.

Besides insulin release, exercise is the only way food is used for energy rather than stored as fat or glycogen. With excess carbohydrate consumption, the excess is rapidly converted into triglycerides and then stored in fat tissue, and a little stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles. When you exercise in the morning, your body cannot store fat as easily because it is using more energy for the rest of the day. This increases your body's sensitivity to insulin.

4. Eat small, frequent, healthy, well-balanced meals and snacks about every 3 hours throughout the day.

Your pancreas release insulin when you eat. Eating smaller frequent, healthy meals and snacks causes gradual fluctuations in insulin release, more stable glucose levels, and more stable energy and moods. It also helps your body burn calories more efficiently. In comparison, when you eat every 6 hours or more, you get a meteoric spike of insulin. This makes the pancreas work harder, and causes greater fluctuations in glucose and your energy level. Furthermore, your body will store fat more easily.

5. Eat at least 7 to 9 servings of dark green leafy and brightly colored vegetables and fruit each day (a serving of fruits and vegetables is about the size of a baseball, before cooking).

Vegetables and fruits contain a wide variety of vital nutrients that have properties which balance hormones, help prevent infections, help your body's recovery from stress and injury, help your body burn calories efficiently and help you maintain stable insulin output and glucose levels. In general, the deeper the color, the more nutrient dense it is.

6. Drink at least 1/2 ounce of water for each pound of body weight each day.

All processes in the body occur in the presence of water.

7. Have 2 to 3 bowel movements each day (if you do the above regularly, this will likely happen)

Besides urinating and sweating, our body cleans itself of toxins through bowel movements. If you do not have 2 to 3 bowel movements each day, you are consistently and slowly building up toxins in your system. Over time, this has harmful effects to all body systems, including insulin levels.

8. Keep a stable temperament and a positive attitude.

Our brains and nervous system are the master control regulators of all bodily functions. Negative dispositions, such as moodiness, irritability, anger, bitterness, unforgiveness and ingratitude negatively affect all hormones and digestive processes, accelerate aging and makes us more susceptible to harming ourselves or others.

9. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night and don't stay up later than 10 PM at night.

Melatonin (the sleep hormone) is released in response to decreased light. Melatonin is a very powerful antioxidant for the brain cells. Growth hormone (the main recuperative, repair and recovery hormone) is released in 10 to 20 minute pulses about every 1-2 hours during deep sleep at night. The longer you stay asleep the more total growth hormone output and the more repair and recovery from daily stress. With consistent, good night's sleep, less cortisol is produced. Pour the contents into a glass measuring cup. Now pour them into the individual lip balm containers.

This step is optional. We've been told, in one way or another that exercise can help loses weight and burn fat. However, which exercise is the most effective?

If you ask this question to a group of athletes from different sports, some will say jogging or running is the best exercise to lose weight and burn fat, and increase overall metabolism. While others will say weight training, walking, biking riding, aerobic, hiking, cross country skiing, etc. can do the same and increase metabolism more and sustain it for a longer period of time. The argument could go endless.

Whether you jog or walk, your body does not know what type of exercise derived. It really comes down to intensity and how much work you put in the workout. Is it true there are some exercises that burn more calories than others in the same amount of time but the outcome really depends on how hard you exert yourself and the amount of muscle mass in play. For example, suppose you like swimming and hate cross country skiing. With swimming, you would work at all your body muscles to swim as fast as you can. When you ski you might not work hard or push yourself as much as swimming. That would make swimming a much more effective way for you to exercise because you physically exert yourself with high intensity. I knew when I gave up playing soccer almost a year ago that I would need to fill the void with other activity. I also knew I would eventually question my need and desire to run, which mostly existed to support the sport.

And then it happened. One winter day it occurred to me that I was filled with dread about going running. To psyche myself up to run in cold weather had become a real chore, stemming in part with the challenge of keeping my "stems" warm on the warmest of winter days, never mind the cold ones.

My fitness program no longer fit.

It was easy for me to be fit in the summer with a variety of physical pursuits I enjoy. But winter left me, well, . . . cold. I wasn't experiencing just the occasional off day. And perhaps the gym was long overdue, as my upper body has been somewhat neglected. My primary focus has been largely aerobic activity that favors my legs. My biggest upper body workout is washing and drying my hair. Hey, I have more hair than the average bear.

Now I am a proud gym member and am enjoying it tremendously. It's amazing to me the benefits I've realized in just one months time when I'm lifting weights barely bigger than a hairbrush. I feel stronger and am more aware of my posture. And I really enjoy using muscles I didn't know existed. It just feels good. What is the best part of all? No dread. I go happily and feel annoyed when I can't go.

Choosing a gym
If you're thinking about joining a gym or fitness centre, you need to clarify your priorities in a long list of potential features. Location, for one, is very important because you want to make this as easy as possible, setting yourself up for success.

Surprisingly, with a small gym three blocks from my home, location proved less important to me than the clientele. After test-driving a few options I learned I was clearly more comfortable in a women's only environment.

In addition to location and clientele, here are other features to consider:
• Hours of operation
• Qualified staff
• Gym size (in both area and membership)
• Equipment
• Cleanliness
• Cost
• Daycare
• Group Fitness Classes
• Locker room perks, i.e.: towel service and SHAMPOO
• Access to other sports, i.e.: swimming, racquet sports, running tracks

I encourage you to try a few different places at the time you would likely be using them before you make any commitments. Most offer a free session. Your priorities and what feels right just might become crystal clear. You can't ignore that.

We naturally lose muscle mass as we age. We also tend to put on weight. Coincidence? In other words, weight training is the best form of physical activity for increased metabolism and weight loss, if you enjoy it, that is. You've got to do something you enjoy. If you're new to weight training, make sure you get instruction on proper form and technique. Better yet, work with a fitness trainer for optimum results.

Of course you don't have to join a gym to increase your muscular strength and endurance. You can use your body as resistance with exercises like lunges, squats, push-ups and abdominal crunches. Or you can use free weights, resistance bands or even soup cans - slightly heavier than a hairbrush. How could this be me? This is the question most women find themselves asking as they realize they have a drinking or drug problem. Usually this question arises after many difficult experiences including: drinking and driving, getting a DUI, physical injuries/accidents, blackouts, sexual encounters that would not have happened sober, poor work performance, hangovers, a run-down immune system, shame, self-loathing, etc. Unfortunately, alcohol and drug problems do not announce themselves directly, and one of the primary features of these problems is the ability to deny and rationalize them away, even after repeated negative consequences that are clearly related to drinking or using.

Did you know that women are the fastest growing segment of substance abusers in the US? That substance disorders in women are under-recognized and under-treated? That virtually all drugs including alcohol are far more damaging to women's bodies than men's? That women experience more social disapproval for their alcohol use? That alcoholic women are more stigmatized than men? That women with substance use problems are more likely than men to have experienced trauma and to have higher rates of concurrent psychiatric problems? If you have this problem, then you may know that these statements are true.

More questions arise. How do I know if I have a problem? What do I do to get help? How can I battle the demon of denial-(it's not that bad, I can just have a few, I'll deal with this tomorrow.)? How can I battle the demons of shame and self-loathing-(I'm a miserable idiot, why can't I just stop/drink normally like everyone else, what could I have said or done during my black-out.)?

Most people have heard about Alcoholic's Anonymous, and many of you reading this may have already tried it. AA used to be more of a men's club, but that has certainly changed as more women admit to themselves that they have a problem and begin the journey of recovery. In my career as a therapist (over 30 years!) I have seen many women get help and recover through AA. It doesn't always "stick" on the first try, and most people have had slips and relapses to prove this. Sometimes the structure of a treatment program is needed to bring in safety and stability. Sometimes it's the old adage "ninety meetings in ninety days". And if you want a support group only for women, check into Women for Sobriety.

If you are a woman who has experienced abuse as a child or are/have been in an abusive relationship, then psychotherapy in addition to AA or other support groups can be very helpful. This is because trauma is often the culprit behind the drinking and using. Trauma or abuse can cause you to feel angry with yourself, feel helpless, feel empty and alone. This is especially true if no one was/is there to protect you from the abuse, or if it was known about but ignored or shoved under the rug. Drinking and using can be a way of self-soothing and self-medicating, except that it will ultimately boomerang and become another source of problems for you.

As women, we need to understand how to stop abuse from happening to the next generations. We need to say "no" more and learn how to face our pain with compassion and support. Understanding Integrity Can Free You From Emotions of Unworthiness by Leon Cautillo

For the most part your integrity is 'out' whenever you are giving your attention to something you believe doesn't work according to what you believe does. For example if you believe eating meat on Friday is a sin and you do, you'll feel some degree of emotional guilt. If no one ever suggested to you that it was a mortal sin you will not feel guilty for there is no conflicting emotion. Now that is a fairly simple example but I'm sure it conveys the message.

There is a significantly more primary understanding that must be considered here. How does the context that would allow the idea that eating meat on Friday get considered? How does a human being believe something is 'bad' or 'sinful'? They feel it. If I told you that wearing blue shirts before noon was a mortal sin and you came in wearing a long sleeve bright blue André Benjamin, I don't believe you'd feel bad. Why? Now why is that? You might feel silly but you surely would not have any negative emotion.

If you were told early on as a child that if you were to disobey the Commandments and Jesus died for you, that would be enough to make you feel guilt and shame and you would be unworthy, undeserving. If you were a rational 25 year old adult you could not feel these kinds of emotions as the brain by now has built a rational defense. Well there is no context for it, no good and bad emotions.

How you know you are out of alignment (that your integrity is out) is by your ability to interpret your emotions rightfully. You have the emotion you desire to feel and the emotion you are feeling that you ate that meat. If the feelings are conflicting there will be the experience of two conflicting emotions that will cause a vibrate 'negatively'.

The scale of emotions could range from possible 'happy, joy, bliss' to the other side 'hopelessness, despair, powerlessness'. These will surely inhibit a positive self esteem.

There are a few notions to dispel in order to understand the road to joy. First, integrity has nothing to do with right or wrong, good or bad and second, or that a human being could be unworthy. These are things a human being can think but nothing a person could ever be.

The context for life is the phenomenon that the word 'works' points to.
The actions of the particles in the cells are moving in a direction that works or does not work to produce life. To what end? To live, to exist, to self actualize.

The question to ask is does it work? Not is it right or wrong good or bad. Is it moral or immoral? The notion that something could be immoral is a man made invention to manage societies. Particles attract like particles not because they are good particles, they do so because it works to produce life.

Your strongest wish is to exist and continue to exist. But before that which is most desired is turned into words, such as I want to exist, I want to live there is the desire to feel more joy as I continue to reach for more of life. The intention to live is primary, to feeling better. The reach towards more joy and happiness is always a reach for live, for freedom. Though there is much more to be said on this subject, these are the fundamental notions. The release of negative emotions allows for greater and greater experiences of happiness to fill ones life.

They love to ride bikes and play in the park but their priority is definitely pointing to the video game console. This is why it's important to avoid looking at strength training as a "workout". Your health depends on staying fit. Building muscle revs up your metabolism and burns fat. It should be your lifestyle.

Here are five tips for gaining more muscle and staying fit:

1. If you do nothing else for your body this week, get a set of calipers for body fat testing or a scale with a body fat monitor. You can use the scale to monitor your progress. Don't take the readout as gospel; just use it to monitor your activity level. If you are losing fat and gaining muscles, it shows up on your scale in the fat percentage reading.

2. Here's a quick way to calculate your calorie requirements. If you want to lose fat and you are working out five times a week, you can use this formula for a quick result. This method doesn't take into consideration what your body composition is like. Use it as a guide and adjust it when necessary.

Take your lean body weight and multiply it by 12. If you are a 220 pound man with an active lifestyle, you can safely take in 2,640 calories a day. You will be able to lose fat instead of muscle if you perform compound exercises three days a week.

To gain weight, multiply your lean body weight by 19 to get your calorie requirement. You can pack on the pounds in muscle instead of fat by performing compound exercises using barbells, dumbbells or machines.

3. To get six pack abs, you need to watch what you eat more than you might think. There are people who are naturally low in fat and with an active lifestyle will show their abs with no extra effort. Others like me can't even think of a doughnut without gaining a pound.

Generally, bringing your body fat down to 10 percent or below will make your rectus abdominis muscles pop. You can generally melt away your body fat if you use compound exercises three days a week and consume less than your calculated lean body weight calorie requirement. If you measure your body fat regularly, you will be able to keep your six pack abs under control.

4. A more accurate way to determine your protein needs is to find out what your lean body weight is and multiply it by 1.14. The reason why you want to use your lean body weight is because that is what you want to feed.

If you weigh 220 pounds and your body fat was 15%, you can subtract 33 (220 x0.15) to arrive at the lean body weight - 187.

Multiply your lean body weight 187 x 1.14 to get a result of 213.18g a day. Take your total and multiply by 6 to get the number of protein grams you need per meal. You ideally should be taking in six meals a day. That would allow your body to keep feeding your cells continually during your day.

The U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances for protein is 0.8g. If you're a strength trainer and or body builder, that's not enough to power your workout and build your muscle cells.

5. The best all around workout for building strength and muscle mass is compound exercises. Squats pull ups, dead lifts, lunges, bench press dips are all compound exercises that will stimulate your testosterone levels and build mass in record time.
