Chronic Ear Infection Treatment

A chronic ear infection can cause ongoing symptoms like ear pain, discharge, congested ears, muffled hearing and fatigue. If you can pinpoint the cause of the recurrent infection then treatment is more likely to be effective.
Lets have a look at the most common causes of chronic ear infections:
1) Poor immunity
The resistance of your body to disease can determine how often you pick up infections. Infections in the ears often occur after a respiratory cold or flu, so it is vital that you work on boosting your immunity in order to minimise these conditions. Low immunity can result from a poor diet, stress, smoking, an underlying disease or a genetic weakness.
2) Chronic bacterial infection

3) Chronic viral infection
Some viruses are latent viruses that remain in your body for life and can be re-activated when you are under stress or run down. When the virus recurs, symptoms of painful ears, congestion, swollen lymph glands, fever and fatigue can return.
4) Chronic fungal infection
Recurrent swimmer's ear (an infection of the outer ear) can be caused by a fungi like Candida. Drying the ears well after swimming, using some topical anti-fungal creams like tea tree oil, and taking some anti-fungal herbs can help eradicate the infection from the body. Candida should also be suspected in chronic ear infections that have not responded to antibiotics.
5) Allergy
Recurrent infections can be triggered by allergens. Food allergies, particularly to wheat and dairy are common. Exposure to environmental allergens like dust mite, mold, animal fur and cigarette smoke can also be a cause.
6) Biomechanical obstruction
Structural problems involving the jaw, skull or neck may contribute to chronic infections of the ears. Downs syndrome children or children who have been through birth trauma which affects their head structure are likely candidates for this problem.
7) Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
Enlarged adenoids or tonsils may cause a blockage in the Eustachian tubes. Fluid from the ear cannot flow freely and the congested fluid acts as a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria.

The Health Risks of Migraines During Pregnancy

There are many added health risks to being pregnant. Here we look at the association of migraines during pregnancy and the increased risk to you and your baby's health.
A recent study in the US has linked migraines during pregnancy with an increase in the risk of a stroke, in fact fifteen times more likely than non pregnant women. However, the British Medical Journal has also stated that the overall risk is actually low.
Data was collected from over thirty three thousand pregnant women who were also diagnosed with migraines.
Age was a determining factor, as women over the age of 40 were nearly two and a half times more likely to suffer from a migraine than women under the age of twenty. White women were also more likely to experience migraines during pregnancy than any other race or ethnicity.
Migraines have also been linked to a rise in the risk of heart disease, blood clots, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. They suggest it is possible that the migraine itself is an indication that the cardiovascular system is not working as well as it should be.
The authors suggest that the most logical explanation for the findings lies in the interaction between migraines and the normal physiological changes during pregnancy (such as increased blood volume and heart rate) which put extra stress on the vascular system.
Past research has indicated that the cells that form the inner wall of blood vessels (endothelial cells), may not operate as well in people who suffer from migraines during pregnancy.
Migraines, especially those linked with an aura or visual changes around the time of the headache, have been previously linked to stroke and heart disease in women. This study continues to validate the connection between the two.

How to Measure Your Blood Pressure - Simple Ways to Do it Yourself

The average normal adult blood pressure is 120 systolic and 80 diastolic or simply stated as 120 over 80 in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) or 120/80 mmHg. Every individual varies in his or her blood pressure level.
The blood pressure reading mentioned above may be used as a reference in measuring your own blood pressure; a little higher or lower from these numbers are still considered within the safe limits.
There are several ways to determine your own blood pressure, you can start with your pulse, a coin-operated machine in a convenient stores, buy a battery operated gadget or purchase the old trusty device used by some doctors called a sphygmomanometer.
Measure the Blood Pressure with Your Pulse
The pulse can be taken from any parts of the body but the ideal part is the wrist. For this purpose use a clock or a watch with a second hand.
All you have to do is place the arm on the table with the elbow parallel to the heart. Find your pulse in the wrist. A right-handed should press the right side of the wrist with the palm facing upward using two to three fingers of the left hand. A left-handed would have to do the opposite.
Get a steady beat for a period of one minute. If already an expert, this can be reduced every ten seconds and multiply it by six. The steady beat represents the blood pressure on the beats per minute and the volume of blood surge to pump the heart. Therefore, a lower pulse rate means a lower blood pressure under resting stage.
Another way to measure your own blood pressure using your pulse is by standing. Just hold your arm upward in the air and find the pulse in the wrist.
Using a Sphygmomanometer
Wrap the band (cuff) around the arm to stop the flow of blood then pump the sphygmomanometer to produce some pressure.
Use a stethoscope to listen to an artery just below the band then slowly release the band. As the blood starts to flow, the systolic pressure (high number) will come through. On the part of the diastolic pressure (low number), the beats will stop and the sound becomes steady.
The use of a stethoscope in other sphygmomanometers is no longer needed due to its built in sound-sensing device which is more sensitive and objective than the ear.
In buying your own sphygmomanometer, directions in its use is sometimes not available. Hence, the following directions on how to use a sphygmomanometer may come in handy.
1. The band should be snugly wrapped but not tightly.
2. Apply pressure using the pump about 200 to 225 millimeters. If in shape, 150 millimeters is alright.
3. Drain the air from the band on a slow and steady basis. Some devices are already on automatic mode.
4. Try to get several measurements to get consistent results. In some cases, inaccurate readings arise due to surges in current, charge build up and low batteries.
5. When taking your own blood pressure always use a table. The elbow should be placed rested on the table about the level of the heart.
The beauty of knowing how to measure your own blood pressure will allow you to gain a personal knowledge of your body for your convenience. Any changes you make on your diet and the effect of your routine exercise will be closely monitored thereby sensing a better body control. Symptoms, Signs and Diagnosing the Asthma

Symptoms and signs of asthma are variable according to the severity of asthma.
Symptoms: (what patient notice):
The three main symptoms of asthma are tight chest, whistling sound (wheezing) while you breathe, and cough. In some cases, cough at night may be the only symptom. Some may complain chest tightness and wheeze in the morning usually within seconds of waking from sleep (morning dips). It may take many minutes or hours to improve.
Signs: (what doctor finds on examination)
Between asthma attacks, your doctor may not be able to identify any problem while examining the patient. But during an acute attack your rate of breathing will become fast, you'll start using the intercostal muscles (small muscles in between ribs) and the time taken to breathing out the air (expiration time) may be prolonged. In some patients, chest itself appears to be like a barrel shape (hyperinflation). Using a stethoscope, your doctor would be able to hear high pitching whistling sounds all over the lung area. Using a peak flow meter (a hand held device which is helpful in assessing the amount of air that the patient can breathe out), he may notice a decreased peak flow rate.
Feature of severe asthma attack:
In severe attack, patient may be very breathless and would not be able to speak. Sometimes they may not be able to form phrases or sentences. Heart beats fast and pulse rate may go above 110/minute. In very severe attack, heart rate becomes very slow (bradycardia), lips may become blue and patient may become drowsy. On checking with stethoscope, chest may be silent, as no air is entering the lungs. Those patients would need immediate attention and possible assisted breathing. In a year, around 2-3 people for every 100,000 population die due to severe asthma attack, which could be avoidable if these patients seek timely medical help.
Diagnosis:
Your Doctor would be normally able to diagnose asthma after asking you some questions and then examining you.
Probability of asthma is very high if any patient has the following:
Symptoms such as chest tightness, wheezing sounds on breathing and difficulty in breathing particularly if the symptoms are worse in the early morning, or exposure to allergens or cold air or after taking tablets like aspirin, or brufen.
If the patient suffers from any type of allergic problems like hay fever or eczema.
If any of patient's family members suffer from asthma or hay fever or eczema.
Low peak flow rate (the amount of air that the patient can breathe out which can be measured by a device called peak flow meter.)
If the doctor is certain about the diagnosis he/she will prescribe medications directly even without any investigations. In some cases it would be difficult to come to a conclusion and in those patients, doctor would organise some tests before making a diagnosis.

Where to Start When You Are Going to Treat Your Own Chronic Back Pain at Home

If you are a chronic back pain sufferer who has been to doctors and chiropractors only to find they can't help, you may end up treating the pain at home yourself as a last resort.
The sad thing is that you best chance of success comes from what you do on your own. Your body will respond to what you do for it, not to what others do and certainly not to any pill. Treating yourself at home should really be your first choice.
If you search the web, you will find a lot of varied advice on what to do. Most of it involves exercise of one kind or another. The exercises are not difficult to do and can give you some relief. Extension exercise is first aid for an aching back.
But that doesn't really address the cause. Doctors can't cure your back pain because they don't teach you correct posture on your first visit. Until you have corrected your postural problems you cannot get long term relief because your spine will remain in an unnatural position.
The first step in treating your chronic back pain at home is to correct your posture. It's not that hard, but you must understand exactly what it is you are doing. Good posture is more than sitting and standing with you back straight.
Good posture is the maintenance of the lumbar lordosis. That is the inward curve of your lower spine. Your challenge in achieving correct posture is in keeping that curve as close to its natural state as possible.
Here's how to find your natural curve. Sit in a chair and slouch forward. You have just lost your lordosis and are at one extreme. Note what it feels like.
Then, over correct your slouch by extending you back and creating as big a curve as you can, without strain. That is excessive lordosis, the other extreme.
Your correct lordosis is in the middle of those two extremes, give or take a little bit. Your body will tell you.
Your job is not to sit and stand straight, it is to maintain the proper curvature of the lumbar spine. The longer you are able to maintain it, and it will take some thought and time, the quicker your back pain will subside. Even if you do nothing else.
One funny thing will happen if you are moving in the right direction. Your spine will feel rubbery and you may get a little muscle soreness. Just like working out with weights, the muscles that are supposed to be supporting your lordosis have been on vacation and are getting sore now that they are being used again.
Take it as a sign of progress and know that it will go away in a day or two. Most likely your back pain will as well.

9 Tips to Stop Anxiety

There are things that you can do to stop anxiety!
To stop anxiety and feelings of panic, you have to take control of your mind, calm yourself and stay centred. Here is what works for me...
Get Moving
Put on your walking shoes and hit the road! Get to the gym! Jump in the pool! ...Do whatever it takes to get you moving. Exercise is one of the best ways to lessen the effects of anxiety. Chronic anxiety causes a build-up of stress hormones in the body and exercise gets rid of them. Accumulated adrenalin increases feelings anxiety and makes you more jumpy and nervous. Any form of exercise helps stop anxiety getting out of control... And has many other benefits. The dog will love you if you take him for a run!
Cut the Caffeine
Too much caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and makes you feel more jittery and out-of-control. When trying to stop anxiety, you want to get calm and not more nervous! And hold back on the alcohol!
Limit your "Worry Time"
You may not be able to stop anxiety, BUT you CAN cut down on the amount of time you spend worrying. Make a conscious decision to give yourself 30 minutes of "anxiety time" once a day. Make a list of things you worry about and give it your full attention once a day. Then put it aside and wait for tomorrow before you look at again. Our anxiety grows in proportion to the attention we give it. I do this, and it works for me!
Face Your Fears
Psychologists call this "exposure". Make yourself come face to face with what causes your feelings of anxiety. If you stress about your finances, sit down with all of your debts and income and make a real plan to get on top of it. Is a stressful relationship causing you to feel anxious? - Speak to the person concerned, or get help! But DO something about it!
Phone a Friend
You know the old saying? - "A trouble shared is a trouble halved" - It's true! By verbally expressing your anxiety, you dissipate the energy around it and lessen the effect it has on you. And your friend might have some good suggestions on what to do. Talking about it also helps you see it in a different light. Phone a Help Line if you feel desperate.
Breathe
You can use your body to calm your mind. Taking a deep breath and counting to ten allows your mind to be still and takes your attention away from the feelings of panic. To stop anxiety, you need to take control of your mind. Don't wait for the panic attack - make relaxation an important part of your daily exercise. Do a body scan and learn to release tension before it catches up with you.
Eat Right
Anxiety depletes your body of essential nutrients for a healthy nervous system. You can help stop anxiety attacks by eating stress-busting foods. Make sure you know what to include in your diet!
Clean the Clutter
Anxiety is a feeling of panic and being out of control. A good way to stop anxiety feelings is to take control in a small way over things that you CAN manage. Start with that cluttered drawer that irritates you every time you need to find something in it. Replant the scruffy pot plants. Do something constructive!
Have a Laugh
Laughing is sometimes the last thing you think of doing when trying to stop anxiety. But it really works. A good laugh releases endorphins (feel-good hormones) into the system. Watch a funny movie. Think of a stupid joke... Anything that gets a smile on your face.
