6) Make sure any equipment you use is in good condition and works properly.

Health Savings Accounts Should Be Available to All Americans By Marla Finnigan

All Americans should have the right to save for current and future healthcare expenses with pre-tax dollars. Health Savings Accounts provide some Americans with precisely that opportunity, but it is too limited in its scope to benefit the majority of the US. I love the concept of Health Savings Accounts (HSA), if you're not familiar with them they are savings accounts in which money can be put away for future medical expenses on a pre-tax basis. In order to be eligible for an HSA you must be covered under a qualifying high deductible health insurance plan (HDHP). These are health insurance policies that typically cost less because they require their holders pay a high deductible (typically greater than $1000 annually). Unfortunately, the eligibility requirement to participate in a health savings account precludes the majority of the population from receiving a privilege that should be as basic as saving for one's own retirement.

In a recent response from my Congressman, he suggested I consider using a sister product, the Flexible Spending Account (FSA). Although beneficial, the benefits of an FSA fall short of the benefits in an HSA; primarily because the balance of unused money in an FSA expires annually where an HSA rolls over from year to year. This is a monumental difference. With an HSA I have a means to cover current and future medical expenses which can accumulate to a retirement vehicle which becomes available for any purpose at age 65. The rollover benefit becomes an even greater benefit when you consider the funds in Health Savings Account are eligible to pay the premiums on Cobra. Contributing to an HSA provides financial resources to use should one lose their job. Americans can use their HSA to pay the necessary 102% of their health premiums through COBRA or they may roll the money into a less expensive high deductible health plan (HDHP) with the resources to meet the high deductible.

Let's look at a couple of case studies.

Dick and Jane

Dick and Jane are engaged. Jane has been submitting $2600 into and HSA for the past five years. During that time she has only consumed $1600 in health care costs that means Jane has been able to build up a health nest egg of $11,400. After they are married Dick begins carrying Jane as a dependent on his health care plan which does not qualify as a high deductible health care plan. Under current laws, Jane would be forced to discontinue contributing to her HSA, but it if all Americans were eligible for this savings incentive she wouldn't have that problem. Instead they could increase their contribution $5,150. After a year, Dick may lose his job, but the family has been able to save $16,550. Their healthcare nest egg provides Dick and Jane with additional options. They may select to continue their current coverage through COBRA or they can select an alternate health care option. If COBRA were to cost $400 a month they can utilize their HSA funds. With these funds they would have the means of paying for coverage for 41 months. They could also choose to purchase independent health coverage. Their $16,550 nest egg minimizes their risk on a high deductible healthcare plan. They could conceivable absorb a $10,000 deductible and reduce their monthly payment to about $200, or half the cost of their cobra payment.

Scott and Laura

In the scenario of Scott and Laura, Scott is a severe asthmatic. His condition leads to a hospital stay about once a year costing about $3000. He must also have continuing medication at a monthly cost of $112. Scott and Laura are both on her employer's group health plan. They pay $112/month with a $500 deductible and a 20% coinsurance. Because Scott and Laura will lose the money in the FSA if they don't spend it by the end of the year, they only save the cost of Scott's prescriptions. Now, if Laura loses her job their healthcare future becomes much less secure because Laura's plan was not HSA eligible, they do not any residual savings from their health care expenses nor were they granted guaranteed tax savings from their medical expenses. If they keep the medical insurance they clearly need through COBRA they now need to pay $400/month. These annual premiums total $4000 alone meaning that Scott and Laura only save about $340 a year by having health insurance. This does not include the cost of any of the co pays. Keeping the insurance could increase their medical expenses to about $6000 a year or $550/month at a time when the family income has been reduced. Scott and Laura have a very difficult choice to make in regards to their healthcare. Should they continue with coverage or should they let the family health insurance lapse?

Had they been able to contribute to an HSA, their scenario may have looked a little different. Scott and Laura would still have the same policy but chose to contribute the maximum allowable to their HSA. From the $5150 they withdrew $2610 for healthcare expenses leaving $2540 to accumulate over for the next year. Over the course of 5 years they have accumulated $12700 in the HSA. If Laura loses her job their options look much more promising. They can more easily absorb costs of COBRA and provide for the costs of their existing coverage for their entire 18 month term of eligibility. By making wise decisions in time of plenty, Scott and Laura would be able to prevent financial devastation or public dependence in the future and still provide the means to maintain their health needs. All health consumers should have the option to participate in an HSA and receive the corresponding tax benefits. The opportunity to participate in an HSA should not be tied to a high deductible health insurance plan. As it is written an HDHP with an HSA discriminates against most Americans, namely, consumers whose employers don't offer a qualified high deductible healthcare plan and those who may have regular health needs which require a more generous health plan including young families who may need maternity or well child care.

Ironically, those ineligible to participate are doubly discriminated against. Not only do they lose the opportunity to financially prepare for the future healthcare needs, but it actually results in having higher healthcare costs. Here's how:

1. High deductible health care plans often attract the healthiest segment of society, and when you remove the healthy consumers from the general insurance pool, rates rise to cover the lost revenue and higher payout per consumer.

2. Non participants must pay deductibles and uncovered health care from post tax dollars or they must try to forecast their annual health expenses through a flexible spending account (FSA). If they underestimate, they are again paying for expenses with post-tax dollars and if they overestimate they lose the unspent balance.

3. Individuals who have continuing healthcare needs are at the mercy of their employer for continued coverage. The loss of employment often means the loss of health care and can bring great personal risk and financial hardship.

By eliminating the requirement that an individual have a HDHP plan, you open the door for many more participants. These are people who need to hedge against risk in their health and financial well-being. When you allow people to pay their insurance premiums with their HSA, you grant them a means of planning for their health future, without discriminating based on their health care needs. Nationally, you increase the savings rate, sending more money into banks, and driving down your uninsured among the unemployed. Fewer people are dependent on government healthcare subsidies because they were able to plan during times of plenty. You open a door for increased retirement savings and, by giving people access to their funds when healthcare is needed, you limit some of the draw on government resources because they don't end up on state sponsored plans.

All Americans should have the right to save for current and future healthcare expenses with pre-tax dollars.

Weight Free Total Workout By Drew Appleford

There is no reason why you have to be in the gym to get a great workout. In fact, there are many people in superb shape who have never lifted a weight in their life! Here is a great workout that does not require any equipment (of course, having access to a pull up bar or similar would be great!). Hopefully it motivates you to get in a quick workout, especially when it's tough to get to the gym.

While this is a "weight bearing" program, it is good to get in a light warmup. This could a slow 1 mile jog or some cardio on your favorite treadmill or rowing machine. If you are in good shape, go ahead and do your regular cardio workout first. It is always smart to be loosened up before any workout. And as always, consult your doctor before engaging in any new workout!

Let's begin. One assumption I have made is that your know how to perform these exercises. If you are unsure, you can do a web search on any of them for instructions or even videos. First, let's look at the exercises we will be using:

1. Push-up - you can vary the width of your hand placements. Also, elevating your feet mimics and incline press.
2. Squat - hold your hands on your hips, straight in front, or behind your head for balance.
3. Chair Dip - Sit on a chair or hard sofa with your hands next to thighs. Push upwards and bring the hips forward, legs straight so you are supporting your body weight. Bend the elbows and lower your body down until elbows are at 90 degrees. Push up for one rep.
4. Lunge - forward or sidestep lunges are good variations.
5. Pull-up - if a bar is available, a great back exercise.
6. Crunches - classic ab exercise also works your core.
7. Calf Raises - can be done on stair steps or an elevated surface; do them standing.

There are two ways you can traditionally do your workout. The first is the old classic, work your way down each exercise (order is up to you, but probably best to alternate between upper body and lower body) and do 2-3 sets of 10-15 reps. The second is to do 2-3 circuits where you do one set of an exercise then move on to the next. Going through the full list of exercises once is one circuit.

For these weight-free workouts, I think doing circuits is better because you can be more creative. You can mix in some cardio between circuits - maybe do 100 jumping jacks or skip rope for 3-5 minutes. Alternatively, you can try going through the entire circuits without any rest between sets.

As you can see, this type of workout is beneficial for lots of different people and situations. I tend to do this workout either when I'm on the road or need a break from the normal weight lifting routines. It is also great for beginners who want to build some strength and stamina before hitting the gym.

Why Law of Attraction Fails By Alina Frank

Since becoming an EFT practitioner I have seen so many amazing healings on a physical level that it almost feels commonplace; but what still thrills me are the emotional changes in people that then attract external circumstances that are no less than miraculous. Here are two examples from two recent cases.

Mary asked me to help her with a health issue that she had been trying to clear up on her own with EFT. The emotional core issue was her fear of people in her life leaving or abandoning her. Throughout her life she had experienced loss. First by her very young mother who left Mary to be raised primarily by her grandparents and then later by a series of friends, lovers, and co-workers.

We acknowledged all of these and tapped every memory that had any intensity left. One of the gifts of EFT is the generalization effect which happened here and thus we didn't have to work on as many as I had originally felt needed to be cleared.

During our last session Mary realized that she also had a fear that her current boyfriend would be leaving her soon and we worked on that as well. Two weeks later her boyfriend proposed to her!

The other case involved Susan and her fear of power. A pattern emerged after the first few minutes of our first session where each time Susan had tried to do something to move her forward in her career it would always fail. This started back when she had been a very intuitive and powerful child and members of her family resented her for it. After a while she had no other choice but to make herself smaller and less noticeable so her family could show her approval.

We cleared that as well as a few other memories where in her love relationships she had needed to do the same sort of self-deprecation. Low and behold shortly after our last session she received notice that the book that she had written and that the publishers had put a year long delay on would be going to press very soon.

Call it what you will - Law of Attraction or reticular formulation, we do bring into our lives that which we are focused and emotional about and this is where EFT really works it's magic.

With most of the Law of Attraction material I have seen it seems they want you to "buck up" and switch to something more positive but most people can't bootstrap as quickly as that. EFT has made that part of manifestation work very simple, easy, and quite effective.

The Computer Is an Enemy to Your Body By Robert A Simmons

Technology has been a great help to people. It helps us to organize ourselves and provides a second brain. By setting alarms and reminders, we can release constant thoughts of the when and where of many tasks. There is, however, a price that we pay for these advantages.

Let's go ahead and look a common scenario. You have decided that you need to do some work at the computer. You need to start the computer, but you don't want get out of the chair and squat down. You bend forward and twist down enough to reach the switch on the computer tower. This movement puts the discs in the low back at their weakest and most vulnerable point. Think about the stress on the low back if you do that movement often.

Now you open the document and start typing. Most people look at the keyboard when they are typing. That bends your head and neck forward. This is the opposite direction that your neck curve is designed to be in. Then what I call "the black hole" develops.

After a short time people actually look like they are getting sucked into the computer screen. The shoulders begin to slump and the head moves forward towards the monitor or screen. For every inch that your head moves forward, there is 25 pounds of additional stress placed on the neck and spine.

The stress now increases because you may stay in this position for hours. In addition to this most people who use computers will do this on a regular basis. We also need to add in the motion of the chair. Now that almost all office chairs have wheels, people don't actually get out of the chair when bending and twisting.

The printer is often positioned off to the side, so the user will just rotate the chair to the side and reach. Again this is places the stress on the low back. When going from sitting to standing, the computer user will rotate the chair and step out instead of backing the chair out and standing straight up. Does this scenario sound familiar to you? There are some things that you can do to reduce the stress on your body while using the computer.

First look at your workstation. The monitor should be at eye level and directly in front of the keyboard. Rotate the position of your printer periodically if you can. A great alternative to rolling your chair is to back your chair out from the desk and stand up straight. Just performing this task will eliminate a lot of stress on your body.

Be observant of your elbow and hand position. It's best to use a chair with no armrests. This will actually allow you let your shoulders relax, instead of being push up. A good hand rest for your wrists is a great idea. Just make sure that your forearms a parallel with the floor. It is also important that your thighs be parallel with the floor when adjusting the height of the chair.

Remember to stand up and stretch every 30 minutes or so. Just getting out of the chair and stretching or walking around will allow your body extension time. All computer work is bending forward. This is called flexion. By standing, your are extending your body and releasing tension.

Exercising For Diabetes Prevention and Management By Megan Winegar

If you have diabetes, you're probably very aware that at least 30 minutes of exercise per day can be a great way to manage it. Exercise promotes weight loss and can prevent some of the more serious complications associated with the disease, and for those with pre-diabetes, it can actually reduce the risk of diabetes.

However, exercising doesn't have to be a huge ordeal. Certainly no one is asking you to lift weights in the Olympics next year, and you should make sure to talk to your doctor or diabetes educator before you start any exercise program to see how it will affect your blood sugar. After you get the scoop though, here are some ideas for good exercises that you can easily use to meet your goals.

You should try to get a well-balanced diet of exercise in your life. Exercise should include some aerobic exercise, some strength training, and some flexibility exercise. (This goes for all adults, not just those with diabetes. It's just good policy.) Here are a few ideas from each category.

Aerobic

* Walking is still a good option for anyone, and it's easy to fit into your schedule. If you live close enough, walk to the store, or to work. * Fun stuff like roller blading, ice skating, dancing, or tennis.
* Try treadmills or stationary bikes in winter to prevent your routine from being interrupted just because you don't want to go outside.

Strength Training

* Join a gym and have someone show you how to work various muscles. More muscles burn more calories.
* Try weight training at home with a small set of weights. Its doesn't take much when you just want to tone and build strength.

Flexibility

* Make sure you're stretching when you exercise. This keeps your muscles limber for exercise and also keeps them healthier later on.

Finally, certain things are just good practice for a healthy lifestyle. Park far from the door when you go to the store and walk from the other end of the parking lot. Take the stairs. Do some vigorous house cleaning or yard work. Staying active will make you feel better, physically and mentally.

Autistic Kids Can Be Helped by Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers By Paul S Fitzgerald

You may be acquainted with hyperbaric oxygen treatment, in which a patient breathes in additional oxygen while within a pressurized chamber, as a care for the bends and carbon monoxide poisoning. But while a little segment of families with autistic kids believe it helps their kids, insurance often does not pay for it, and many doctors are doubtful that it does any good.

New research in today's BMC Pediatrics may give the care more credibility as care for autism.

The randomized, double-blind controlled study of 62 youngsters revealed that people who received forty hours of treatment over a month were less irritable, more responsive when folk spoke to them, made more eye contact and were more companionable than youngsters who failed to receive it. They were also less delicate to noise (some autistic youngsters experience a sort of sensory overload from loud sounds and background noise).

The most improvement was noted in children older than 5 (the study included youngsters ages 2 to 7) who had milder autism. It is not clear why the treatment helped, asserts study co-author Dan Rossignol, a family surgeon at the Global Kid Development Resource Center in Melbourne, Fla, which treats kids with developmental defects. But the pressure may ease inflammation assumed to prohibit blood flow to regions of autistic youngsters's brains that control speech, or improve its capability to absorb oxygen, he tells ScientificAmerican.com. "We're not claiming it's a cure," Rossignol asserted, "but if you can improve understanding so a kid does not run in front of a vehicle, or improve sleep, that is a benefit." While the study only treated and tracked the kids for a month, children who receive the same number of sessions outside of study settings regularly remain better for longer, Rossignol announces.

Others improve after eighty sessions, according to Robert Hendren, executive director of the College of California Davis M.I.N.D. Institute, a big autism research center. He adds that some fogeys also buy chambers (licensed by the Food and Drug Administration) and give their children continual "tune-ups" at home, though those treatments have not been studied. While most kids tolerate the treatment well, it could cause claustrophobia, bruising of the eardrums, sinus discomfort and, rarely, fits, Rossignol announces.

A computed one in 150 kids in the U.S. Have autism in what some are calling a pandemic of the disorder, according to the Centers for Illness Control and Prevention (CDC). "It's going to cost plenty of cash and yet if it is working, it'd be vital to provide youngsters with this sort of treatment," says, Hendren.

"It may help reverse, in principle, some of the method that is causing the autism.".

Exercise Can Help Relieve Lower Back Pain By Jim O'Neill

If you are one of the millions of people that suffer from lower back pain, then you need to know that exercise can do wonders for you. When it comes to relieving lower back pain, exercise provides more long term relief than any back pills that your doctor can give you. The fact is, pills only serve to mask the problem by providing temporary relief of the pain, but the problem that is causing much of the pain is still there. Exercise will strengthen the muscles that support your back and improve flexibility thus greatly reducing the chances of future attacks.

You should be doing a three fold program of exercise which includes aerobics, resistance and stretching exercises. Aerobic exercise like walking and bike riding will begin to get your body conditioned properly because it strengthens your heart and lightly works your muscles. Resistance exercise like weight lifting will strengthen the muscles that support your back. Stretching exercises will increase flexibility giving your back a greater range of motion. Your doctor can guide you as to when and how much of each type of exercise you should be getting.

For people with lower back pain, the best aerobic exercises to do are low impact ones like swimming, walking and bike riding. Jogging, dance aerobics and step aerobics all produce repeated impact on your back and on your knee and hip joints as well. In order to get in good condition, start out with 15 minutes of light aerobic work per day, 2-3 times per week, and then gradually build yourself up to 30-40 minutes per day, 4-5 times per week.

You should be working enough to raise your heart rate to be in between 65% to 85% of your maximal heart rate. You determine your maximal heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. Regardless of whether you are walking, bike riding or doing any other aerobic exercise, always maintain good posture. This means sit up strait, stand strait and do not slouch or lean forward. Good posture is essential to any good exercise program.

When it comes to resistance exercising, you always want to concentrate on the abdominal muscles. These muscles play a major part in giving your lower back support and the stronger they are, the more relief for your back. Also important is to do exercises that are designed to specifically strengthen the lower back muscles themselves. You will best benefit from working each muscle group 2-3 times per week. You may want to hire a qualified fitness trainer to help get you on your way by designing a resistance program that is right for you.

Remember that while resistance exercise is great for strengthening the targeted muscles being worked, there should never be any pain involved. Some discomfort should be present in the muscles being worked while performing the exercises for them, but should subside very shortly after completion of the exercise. If there is any pain during the exercises or if discomfort persists for some time after, it is a sign that something is wrong and exercising should be discontinued and your doctor should be consulted immediately.

As far as stretching is concerned, 10-15 minutes of moderate stretching per day is usually enough to get the job done just fine. Here you really want to concentrate on stretching your hamstrings which are the muscles in the back of your upper legs. The looser your hamstring muscles are, the better range of motion your back will have as flexible hamstring muscles do not put the strain on your lower back that tight ones do.

Stretching the lower back muscles is also a must and sitting on the floor with your legs flat on the floor in front of you while you slowly reach for your toes until you can't go any further, hold for 10 seconds, and sit back up is a great exercise to stretch both your hamstrings and your lower back. Repeat this stretch 2-3 times each day.

While there are no miracle cures for lower back pain, you can make living with a lower back condition much easier to deal with by simply incorporating some exercise into your life each day. It is worth the effort in the long run give up 30-40 minutes per day, 4-5 days per week to exercise away your lower back pain.

Aerobic exercise like walking and bike riding will begin to get your body conditioned properly because it strengthens your heart and lightly works your muscles. Resistance exercise like weight lifting will strengthen the muscles that support your back. Stretching exercises will increase flexibility giving your back a greater range of motion. Your doctor can guide you as to when and how much of each type of exercise you should be getting.

For people with lower back pain, the best aerobic exercises to do are low impact ones like swimming, walking and bike riding. Jogging, dance aerobics and step aerobics all produce repeated impact on your back and on your knee and hip joints as well. In order to get in good condition, start out with 15 minutes of light aerobic work per day, 2-3 times per week, and then gradually build yourself up to 30-40 minutes per day, 4-5 times per week.

You should be working enough to raise your heart rate to be in between 65% to 85% of your maximal heart rate. You determine your maximal heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. Regardless of whether you are walking, bike riding or doing any other aerobic exercise, always maintain good posture. This means sit up strait, stand strait and do not slouch or lean forward. Good posture is essential to any good exercise program.

When it comes to resistance exercising, you always want to concentrate on the abdominal muscles. These muscles play a major part in giving your lower back support and the stronger they are, the more relief for your back. Also important is to do exercises that are designed to specifically strengthen the lower back muscles themselves. You will best benefit from working each muscle group 2-3 times per week. You may want to hire a qualified fitness trainer to help get you on your way by designing a resistance program that is right for you.

Remember that while resistance exercise is great for strengthening the targeted muscles being worked, there should never be any pain involved. Some discomfort should be present in the muscles being worked while performing the exercises for them, but should subside very shortly after completion of the exercise. If there is any pain during the exercises or if discomfort persists for some time after, it is a sign that something is wrong and exercising should be discontinued and your doctor should be consulted immediately.

As far as stretching is concerned, 10-15 minutes of moderate stretching per day is usually enough to get the job done just fine. Here you really want to concentrate on stretching your hamstrings which are the muscles in the back of your upper legs. The looser your hamstring muscles are, the better range of motion your back will have as flexible hamstring muscles do not put the strain on your lower back that tight ones do.

Stretching the lower back muscles is also a must and sitting on the floor with your legs flat on the floor in front of you while you slowly reach for your toes until you can't go any further, hold for 10 seconds, and sit back up is a great exercise to stretch both your hamstrings and your lower back. Repeat this stretch 2-3 times each day.

While there are no miracle cures for lower back pain, you can make living with a lower back condition much easier to deal with by simply incorporating some exercise into your life each day. It is worth the effort in the long run give up 30-40 minutes per day, 4-5 days per week to exercise away your lower back pain.
